Accountability and Monitoring of Public Resources in Songea

In a bid to promote youth engagement in accountability and monitoring of public resources, from 26th to 27th April 2019, FES Tanzania in collaboration with alumni of its Young Leaders Forum, organized a training with representatives from civil society organizations and political parties in Songea region. The meeting aimed to raise awareness on how youth can engage in the decision making process and track the public expenditure systems. They were enabled with the knowledge and skills on how to conduct Social Accountability Monitoring (SAM) and Public Expenditure Tracking Systems (PETs).

The training contributed to knowledge about their roles and responsibilities of participating in local government development programs, understanding the concept of youth engagement in the decision making process, provided social media training on reporting and specific advocacy techniques. The training also brought to the fore several challenges which were identified and discussed by the participants: lack of knowledge on budget processes at local government authorities, gap of communication and relationship between youth and LGAs in Songea, and lack of platforms to discuss or engage in. Youth were also urged to participate in the local government meetings.
